Q&A with Colin Dempsey

Colin was lucky to chat with Jaime Pond of Anglonerd Magazine recently regarding his comedy and music. If like us, you’re a total anglophile we highly recommend checking out the magazine for yourself (and not just for the interview). It’s filled with everything you miss from Irish & UK television.

Last month, I visited Irish bar Ryan’s Daughter in New York City to attend the renowned storytelling series Stoops to Nuts, as I sometimes do, and was delighted by the music of indie rock duo Supersmall, whose debut album Silent Moon comes out February 2016. One half of Supersmall is Irish comedian and storyteller Colin Dempsey, who, in addition to delighting us with his tunes, told–for the first time on stage–the story of owning a car from hell that resulted in a broken hand and, in a round about way, broken ribs. After the demon vehicle kept him away from the steering wheel for ten years, Dempsey now drives in his home of New York City, which, he says, is like driving in Mad Max but with drivers who are more reckless.

Audio Fuzz – Powerful Folk Pop

Kind words from AudioFuzz about our single Riot. Click HERE to read the article.

“Supersmall is composed of singer-songwriter, Colin Dempsey, and drummer, Daniela Schiller. Dempsey is an Irish writer and storyteller based in New York. He has performed his unique blend of indie-rock music in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and most recently, the US. Schiller is a musician, storyteller and Neuroscientist, who leads the Schiller Lab of Affective Neuroscience at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.  Together, they make beautiful dreamy pop music in the same vein as The Mountain Goats and a more straight-forward version of Neutral Milk Hotel with stripped down production.  There is nothing at all small about Supersmall, they are a large sounding folk/pop group.  Beautiful vocals, beautiful arrangements.” – AudioFuzz

New York Solo Six

I want to give this show some love. New York Solo 6 aka NYSolo6, is a show produced and run by The Bitter Poet (Kevin Draine) every first Monday of the month at The Four Faced Liar. It consists of six of NYC’s most dynamic singer songwriters playing in rotation. Besides the four regulars (including yours truly) there are always two different songwriters each month joining us. The bar is full, the beer is cold, and you’ll always hear something you love. So, come on out sometime, you’ll be glad you did.  Next show is December 7th.

NYSolo6

Fall Winter Fall

Last week was a busy one: NYSolo6, New York Story Exchange, QED – A Very Special Episode, a rehearsal, one cancelled show (a treasured night off) and some other random stuff I won’t bore you with. Below are some pictures from the New York Story Exchange, a regular storytelling series that takes place downstairs at Cornelia Street Cafe. I’ve performed at the venue so often they gave me an artist discount card. I still have to get around to using it. Anyway, it’s the type of show I’ve really grown to love doing – being the musical act on a show not about music.

Now that the weather is finally shifting into winter, I am constantly being reminded of how much I love the city during this darkening time of year. Walking through the West Village, Washington Square Park or the Lower East Side on my way to a show seems that little bit more magical under street light. I’m sure as the air dips below freezing i’ll be quick to curse for summer. Until then I’ll enjoy the rest of the shows I have lined up and whatever other adventures are on the calendar.

Road Gig Long Eddy, NY.

This weekend So We Are took a road trip north to Long Eddy, NY to perform at The Rock Valley School House. We all arrived early Saturday for lunch and after some rest we started again with a tasty BBQ and a libation-infused music jam at Joe’s cabin. The following morning we packed up and made our way to the Schoolhouse to perform. It was a full house and on two songs we were joined by friends Ward, Cliff and Matt providing some angelic backing vocals. After the show we all moved down the road to a converted church for some post show food and drinks. This gig was by far our best and most enjoyable. You could not have wished for a better crowd or venue. We even hit only some light traffic on the way back to New York. Marisa took a few photos, some of which I have posted below:
