Live at The Barn at The Egremont Village Inn.

I recently had the oppertunity to perform a Supersmall solo set at The Barn at The Egremont Village Inn, South Egremont, MA on November 15th, 2016. One of the many advantages of playing such a great venue was also staying there for the weekend. The staff and locals were great and it snowed after the show turning an already beautiful part of the countryside into an early sample of Christmas. Check out the link above to the set. Also, be sure to check on the Supersmall website for all upcoming shows.

Indie Music Magazine

It has been a good week for my band Supersmall. As mentioned earlier, getting a positive response from Neil Finn regarding Silent Moon was something I found personally very gratifying. Definitely a high point thus far.

We also got a really positive review from Indie-Music Magazine recently. It is the longest running (since 1996) website and magazine that covers independent music. They’ve followed us from the very beginning and it was great to get such a great review from folks that really get our music. You can read the review HERE.

“Schiller and Dempsey are one of those rare duos that captures two perfectly matched counterparts bringing out the best in each other. The strength of the songwriting and lyricism is almost a bonus; their individual performances are so charismatic and seamless that it’s easy to get lost and swept up in Silent Moon. It is hopeful, romantic, and timeless.”

Queens Scene Magazine gave some love for Supersmall’s Silent Moon recently. as part of their section Tunes & Taverns. Click here for the full article or just read our part below 😉

Colin Dempsey is an Irish-born singer/songwriter that lives in Astoria. Colin’s music is under the moniker Supersmall and the latest release, Silent Moon is a beautiful blend of artists like Nick Drake, and Frank Turner. Poetic, fun, and folky. Colin is not alone in his endeavors as Supersmall as he’s joined by the wonderfully talented drummer Daniela Schiller. The two musicians together bring an eclectic world perspective that translates to a wonderful harmonious arrangement that is their debut LP, Silent Moon. The group has been acclaimed in publications like indiemusic.com and the deli magazine. This is a group you are going to want to keep an eye out for.

PopVLTR Interview (2013)

I was updating the website this morning and found this dead link. Makes me kinda depressed when I click on those things. Anyway, it was an interview for a since closed Californian based music magazine called PopVLTR. I thought i’d post it here as it no longer exists on the Interwebs and whatnot.

It took us a little longer than expected to follow up with the second record but hey!, we got there 😉

popVLTR: You’ve been making moves in New York, how’d you get into music?

When I was about 12 years old I started playing an old Japanese Yamaki guitar that had always been lying around the house—and by fifteen I was playing in various bands around Dublin and writing my own material (of questionable quality). In my mid-twenties I lived in Australia for about a year and performed as a singer-songwriter in bars around Melbourne, which was a huge learning experience. I moved to New York when I was twenty six but gave up music for several years due, in part, to some pretty bad writer’s block. I picked it up again recently and the result was Supersmall. I’m glad I gave music a second chance, I’ve been having more fun with it then I’ve ever had in the past.

popVLTR: Congrats on ‘This Other World’, who are some of your influences?

Neil Finn would be the biggest influence. His masterful skill with melody, throwing in a chord you weren’t expecting at just the right time, and of course the imagery and mood he creates through his lyrics have all had a big effect on the band. Aimee Mann, Neko Case, Thom Yorke and Pink Floyd along with jazz and blues have all left their mark in various ways.

popVLTR: What are some of your proudest moments in music?

I’ve had some interesting shows and experiences, either solo when living in Australia or with various bands I played with back in Dublin. To be honest, making This Other World with the limited time and resources we had, the positive response we’ve received and getting back into music again is top of my list.

popVLTR: What cool stuff is on the horizon for Supersmall?

Daniela and I are both looking forward to returning to the studio at the end of November to begin recording new material for our first full-length album. This time round we are going to spread the recordings over several months and spend more time on the songs. Hopefully by next summer we’ll have a new record to release. There’s a music video in the works, too. It’s something quite different and I’m anxious to see how that will turn out. We’ve also been talking about a possible small tour of New England in the spring—that would be fun, I hear they have some fine Irish pubs up there.

“Overachievers they may be, but if “A Better Life” is any indication, here’s hoping this is the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship for Supersmall.” – Elmore Magazine.

“A nice acoustic treat. The album is full of sonic goodness, fresh guitar riffs and relaxing vocals that soothe.” – GroundSounds.

“They sound great together.” – Folk Radio UK. The UK’s Leading Folk & Roots Website and Radio Station.

“There is nothing at all small about Supersmall, they are a large sounding folk/pop group. Beautiful vocals, beautiful arrangements. A great band that is on its way to big things. I’m hitching my wagon to their star.” – AudioFuzz

Posters

I found this poster online that was created by Pop & Obachan, one of the bands that shared the night with us last Wednesday at Pianos. They had to cancel but I thought it was pretty cool and wanted to share it. Go check out their music, damn fine also.

Last Show of The Year.

10420242_1030138713673835_6026698548307180210_n

Wednesday night was a rough one. Daniela called me voicing concern about the mini tornado blowing through her neighborhood. I had the contents of my balcony rearranged by a gust or two but I never even thought of cancelling the show. When I looked outside I realized that the constant hissing I had been tolerating was not in fact our usual cranky radiator, but a torrential downpour. Several people cancelled but some folks had bought tickets online and no one refunded. The venue confirmed they were still open, the show must go on. Daniela opted to stay with her daughter who was ill as it was looking like a light show anyhow. The gig would be a solo performance. Driving to the lower east side in the rain I had a growing sense of dread, would people even turn up? We had been playing to large audiences all this year and I wanted to end on a well attended show.

When I arrived the band before us was playing to five people. I had one person waiting for my set. Thankfully more people turned up as 9pm grew closer. Just before I walked on stage the owner asked me if I wanted to make it a free show. Why not? He opened the doors and some more people made their way inside from the bar.  By the time I finished a few songs I had a respectable group of people in attendance. Relief.

I love the rain, particularly when in the village at night. There is something about the light reflecting up from the street that makes the city an other worldly place. It can play havoc on shows though. I was lucky, hopefully our album release on January 20th wont be during a blizzard.
